21 Dec Nadia on the Run | Fireplace DIY
Let’s just say, I’m a Christmas nut and could not imagine ever having a Christmas pass by without a mantle to hang my stockings. I absolutely love my home… but… it doesn’t have a fireplace! Not that we really need one here in San Diego, but still… fireplaces center a room and can be a showstopper and also set the tone for a room… especially if it’s a big, open floor plan.
So Christmas started to approach, and after hearing me complain about how I wouldn’t have a fireplace this year my creative brother just said, “Hey Nadia – Why don’t we just build you one?”
Being on an exterior wall, we had the option to build a legit fireplace, but for ease, comfort, and expense, I opted for a faux one. My one and only must have when designing it, was to have a certain Tabarka tile, which was where all of the inspiration came from. First step was John creating the exact replica on a cardboard cut out for me. He traced the tile on it and I was able to tape it up to the wall so I could get a sense for how it would look – too big, too small, not tall enough (story of my life 😜). Living with this cut out for a couple weeks allowed me to see what it would be like and if it would maximize the space like I was hoping. This is a great idea for anyone who is planning on putting in a bigger statement piece. You could tape it out on the wall with painter’s tape or use cardboard as it’s easy to move around!
Not to spoil the results, but John Colucci – once again – did an amazing job building my dream fireplace and I couldn’t be happier! If you have any custom pieces you need done, don’t hesitate to contact him. He’s creative and can figure anything out. Plus he has every tool known to man in his 6 car workshop.
