Spend a Saturday morning on the 101 and you'll notice it right away. In coastal North County, dogs are part of the scenery. They're trotting along lagoon trails, stretched out under patio tables, and shaking off seawater at the beach. Hit the Beach
Del Mar's North Beach, known locally as Dog Beach, is the heart of North County dog culture. It stretches from 29th Street north to the Solana Beach border, and the rules shift with the seasons:
- Day after Labor Day through June 15: Dogs can run off-leash under voice control.
- June 16 through Labor Day: Off-leash time is limited to dawn until 8 a.m.
- Year-round: Dogs need a current license on their collar, and leashes can't be longer than six feet.
That means we're right at the start of the best season. Go at low tide if you can, when the sand is wide and firm.
In Encinitas, Cardiff State Beach welcomes leashed dogs on its north section, south of lifeguard tower 16. Encinitas's city-run beaches and Carlsbad's city beaches don't allow dogs, so Cardiff and Del Mar are your go-to sand spots.
Carlsbad's Dog Parks
Carlsbad has three dedicated dog parks. Poinsettia Dog Park was the first in the city with a natural grass surface, and it has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, each with agility equipment, drinking fountains, and picnic tables. Alga Norte Dog Park is also split by size, with obstacle-style equipment to keep things interesting. Ann D. L'Heureux Dog Park on Carlsbad Village Drive rounds out the list.
The Encinitas Dog Park
The Maggie Houlihan Memorial Dog Park inside Encinitas Community Park on Santa Fe Drive is a local favorite. It covers about two acres and has a section for small dogs, one for timid or first-time visitors, and a big lawn open to all. It's open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, except Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m., when it closes for cleaning. Encinitas also has designated off-leash hours at several neighborhood parks, so check the city's schedule for the one closest to you.
Trails and Lagoon Walks
Leashed dogs are welcome on Carlsbad's citywide trails and at all Encinitas parks and trails. For the best scenery, head to the lagoons. The Batiquitos Lagoon trail runs along the lagoon's north shore between Carlsbad and Encinitas. Leashed dogs are allowed, and bikes and horses aren't, which keeps it easy and relaxed. Farther south, the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve between Cardiff and Solana Beach has about eight miles of trails. Leashed dogs are welcome everywhere except the slot canyon section of Annie's Canyon.
Treat Yourself (and Your Pup)
North County has some great locally owned pet shops. Carlsbad Pet & Feed was founded by Karen Moore in 2016 and has grown to four locations across Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista. Its Carlsbad Village shop on State Street was Westco, a locals' pet haven, for 34 years before Carlsbad Pet & Feed took it over in 2021.
A few minutes from Alga Norte, EarthWise Pet Carlsbad specializes in natural and raw foods. Its staff has trained as Pet Nutrition Specialists, and some have completed a Certified Pet Dietitian program, so it's a great stop if you have questions about your dog's diet. It also offers professional grooming and self-wash stations.
And if your pup comes home from Dog Beach wearing half of it, Dirty Dogs in the Cedros Design District is your next stop. The self-serve wash stations are walk-in only, and they supply warm water, shampoo, conditioner, dryers, and towels, then clean up the mess for you. Dirty Dogs also has locations in Leucadia, Carlsbad, and Del Mar Highlands.
Rescue Pups Looking for Home
If you're ready to add to the family, Thrive Animal Rescue is a North County gem. Founders Cece Bloum and Georgia Spogli joined forces in 2014 to rescue abandoned dogs of all breeds and ages from local shelters. Thrive is based at Newmarket Farm, about five minutes from the Del Mar Horse Park, where newly rescued dogs get room to run and roll in the grass before finding their forever homes. The team puts real care into matching each dog with the right family. You can browse adoptable dogs online. Visits are by appointment only.
Patio Dining With a Plus One
In Solana Beach, Claire's on Cedros and Naked Cafe both offer dog menus, and Culture Brewing is the kind of place where your pup will probably find a few friends. In Del Mar, Il Fornaio welcomes dogs on its cocktail and enoteca patios. Barrio Eat Mexican in Carlsbad has a dog menu, and Better Buzz in Encinitas gives pups a free puppuccino topped with a treat.
